It may be tempting to embellish a company鈥檚 social or environmental impact but when that is discovered, the business鈥檚 reputation is severely damaged. That鈥檚 called 鈥済reenwashing,鈥 when a company is more concerned with marketing themselves as environmentally friendly 鈥 with deceptive or embellished claims 鈥 than reducing their negative impact on the environment. |

Recognizing that such claims are misleading without disclaimers about how quickly the product will biodegrade in a landfill, California banned the use of these labels on plastics. And an oil company was fined for falsely labeling their biodiesel fuel as 鈥淕reen Diesel鈥 and eco-friendly. |
ON CAMERA (Sandeep Patnaik, PhD Program Director, Marketing Department of Business Management UMGC) | Patnaik: To sum up, true sustainability is a winning strategy for the environment, our future, and a company鈥檚 overall success. |
